Darelyn HEMET, CA
I helped paint the crack in the Liberty Bell in 1976. I grew up feeling
pride and patriotism every time I drove by the dam. My kids feel the
same, since I tell the story each time we pass it. I would hate to see
future Americans denied the benefit of experiencing this monument to
our great country's 200th birthday.
Christy MEDFORD, OR
I served in the military from 1968-1970. I lived in Norco but graduated
from Corona Sr High in 1967. The first time I saw it made me well up
with pride for our great country. It will be a great shame and a
disservice if they remove it or change it. I really hope it gets
restored.
Brian SUN CITY, CA
To not repair and replace this mural would truly be a disservice to all
those that served.
LaLonnie NORCO, CA
This is part of my life and history. I grew up seeing this from a child
on my way to go camping. Now I enjoy seeing it to remind me to honor my
great country and our freedom.
Susan SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
I've visited California and this blew me away.
Natalie AURORA, CO
I remember when the mural was painted. It had great meaning then and
still means a lot today. Seen by so many people that it inspires
daily, it deserves to be restored and maintained like any historic
monument because that's a piece of history. Not just for Corona, but
for our country.
Lori H.
I was 10 when this mural was created. When I first saw it I was in awe.
This was such a special event for me it created a feeling of joy and a
strong pride for me. This mural is our history. This represents so much
for each and everyone who sees this even for the first time. To remove
this would be a crime. A crime against "The People". The people who
have gave their all and some their lives. This mural for me is a
keeper. Fix it, keep it!! I am a retired Navy veteran. This is
inspirational and it must be kept!!! Don't destroy history!!!
Marcy POINT, OR
This is part of our heritage. I grew up seeing that at least weekly.
Why take away something that actually means something to people. When
there is so little in Corona or Norco that we can be proud of. Let ou
rd children and grandchildren see the pride we had for where we lived.
Fix it up a little and keep it forever. The cost wont be too great, but
the memories would be priceless.
Jacqueline G
This mural must be saved! I was 5 years old when this mural was done
and I am a very proud American, born in raised in Corona, Class of
1988. My sister, Corona High, Class of 1976, my brothers, Class of
1974, 1981 & 1982. My Sister Genovieve was apart of creating this
mural as well.
As my children were growing, I would tell them the story behind this
mural and it's significance to our area and our country. How their
children and their children's children will always be able to drive by
and see this mural just like I did back in 1976. I couldn't ever
imagine a time when it wasn't there. Seeing the graffiti that was done
to it last year disgusted my children and I. What kind of American
would do this to such an iconic mural?
The Pledge of Allegiance, The Declaration of Independence, The Liberty
Bell, The American Flag, The Statue of Liberty and this beautiful Mural
are symbols of why we are Americans and a part of this great nation.
Thank you to the students of 1976 for being a big part of reminding us
about our Freedom. God Bless America, Land that I Love!
Melanie Dastrup CORONA, CA
I know the students who
designed and painted the dam, it is part of our history.
Sondra Thornton LYNNWOOD, WA
I have very fond memories of living in Corona during my Jr High and
High School years. This is a beautiful tribute to our country. Too much
of what is good is torn down these days. There seems little respect or
pride in our heritage. It would be a terrible loss to lose something
that brings such pride and joy to so many. Please do not "dis" the
students of Corona High AND our country by destroying this wonderful
patriotic contribution to the community and all that pass by it on the
highway. Thank you.
Scotty YORBA LINDA, CA
It has been there as long as I can remember and make me think of all
the military that has fought for those right, including my family.

joined.
Karen REDDING, CA
I grew up down in Orange County and I remember this sign it was always
impressive to see when driving by! We need to care more about
keeping special places in California, too much is just thrown away
these days!
Moira GRAND TERRACE, CA
I've been driving by that since 1976, can't imagine it going away. Just
let volunteers go out and take care of it.
Roland PLACENTIA, CA
Used to drive to work every day and look at it and also a veteran.

Douglas NASHVILLE, TN
One of our best

Good cause then, even better cause now.
Kriss GRESHAM, OR
I grew up in Norco and remember when this mural was painted; in a time
we were still flying the flag at half-staff in memory of the POW-MIAs
in Vietnam; in a time when people fixed thing and reused things and
loved this country and took pride in where they are from. Would be a s
shame and a loss to remove this mural.
Patrick COLORADO SPRINGS, CO
I graduated in 1976 from Corona Senior High School. I know I'm going
home when I see the dam - as a Veteran for over 22 years, the dam is
still a reminder why I joined.

Mark , AZ
Grew up there. It's a Corona tradition
John APPLE VALLEY, CA
The father of my friend was

KENT , CA
It's a significant icon to this Country's Independence.

Tearing this monument down would be like tearing down the Statue of
Liberty or the Washington Monument.
Megan CORONA, CA
I've lived in this city all my life. It's a nice mural and reminds me
of home.
John, KS
I saw the painting when it first went up in 1976. Respect for its
history means it must be preserved, restored.
Ashley CLOVIS, CA
I grew up in this area, saw this almost everyday driving down the

taking it down would be horrible.

The mural is important to not only the surrounding community but this
fight is symbolic of the struggle to keep the opinions of the public at
the forefront of decision-making as opposed to special interest.
I would be willing to come out and help re-paint it! I also believe in
maintaining the original.design
James CORONA, CA
Loved seeing this when it was first painted and was disturbed when
maintenance was stopped. We need to keep the message alive!

Martin KANSAS CITY, MO
As a child, my family would drive by that mural once every couple of
months in the 1980's on our way from Newbury Park to Grandpa's house in
Riverside. We loved seeing it because it meant we were getting close!
Alexandria RIVERSIDE, CA
I am signing because I grew up in Corona and remember driving by it and
looking at it in awe. As a child, it was a masterpiece to the city. It
helped Corona stand out when it was still a small town. That mural mean
so much to the people of Corona, both of the past and present; and it
will continue to mean something to those in the future.
Les RIVERSIDE, CA
I'm in the environmental field and I know the lead based paint used to
paint this wonderful mural is not and will not hurt anything! This move
has nothing to do with the lead paint, it's just more to do with
expression of the majority of the people being taken away to appease a
few who find our patriotism offensive. I hope and pray to GOD that the
mural is left and if anything re-painted exactly the same which by the
way would encapsulate the lead paint which is exactly what should be
done!!!! God Bless America!
Patrick RIVERSIDE, CA
The IE needs to keep its american patriotism.
Colleen LAS VEGAS, NV

I grew up in Chino Hills, this sight represents a happy memory of
leaving town and taking off to the beach, Disneyland, or to visit
family in San Diego. As a teen when it was painted, I never knew how
special it would seem all these years later, and it's really sad to
think of it being gone. I think it's very historical and so rare to
have such a truly splendid display of patriotism, which we really need
more of these days.
Kei MONTEREY PARK, CA
I think it's great to have this kind of historical mural in local!

years, I have worked in the Chino Valley off and on from 1979 to 2001

has been there. It would be a great loss to have it vanish in name of
progress or any other weak reason. Please repair or replace with same
mural design.

To me this is already a historical landmark! Born 1961 I remember the
farms that flooded out behind the dam. The dam pays tribute to those
who had history there also. In my opinion.
You change it and it becomes JUST another dam.
Noreen RIVERSIDE, CA
It is a shame that the mural has not been maintained and that also a

I've lost count of how many times I've driven past this thing on the
freeway. It's been there as long as I can remember, and it should stay
there.
Charles CORONA, CA
I remember when they painted it originally and thought how cool is
that. Living in orange county at the time it was a milepost as we
travel down the 91 freeway headed east. I'm currently a Riverside
resident and still enjoy seeing it when I drive on the 91. Let's not
lose this icon.
Erin VILONIA, AR
I was a graduated of corona

As an American and being raised in corona I want that to be a memorial
to all Americans to see

I think is a great representation of our patriotism. I also think it
will be interesting to see if our massive bureaucratic system is able
to simply do what is right, like it did 36 years ago. This is great
opportunity for all levels of government to prove to the people they
can work together and solve a simple problem.
Kristina BOWLING GREEN, OH
I lived in Upland, Ca when this was painted. I was a child and

country, and only this country, have founding documents in place that
guarantee the rights of the individual over the rights of a governing

This is American history, it's a constant reminder of our country's
founding, the trials, tribulations and blood spilled by those who
fought to make this a free nation. Many people worked their behinds off
to make this mural because it stands for something that so many have
fought for and continue to do so, why take that away? This mural has
been up since 1976, and now, all of a sudden, it's a hazard to the
environment? Not sure if I can take that excuse seriously.

As a lifelong resident of California, and specifically the City of
Corona, I find this mural more of a patriotic landmark than just a
mural. It was, and is, a monument to our history as a country. The Army
Corp of Engineers should at minimum allow for the restoration of it, if
not take on the financial responsibility to mitigate any "lead paint"
issues. I now live in Colorado but visit family in Corona yearly. I
would love to see this monument retained and restored for future

and you can't celebrate Christmas by having statues of baby Jesus in

Please save the mural, it's a part of my best memories of growing up in
Corona, and don't just throw away all that hard work that should have
been preserved from the beginning.

There is no reason why this mural should not be repainted - LOCALLY. It
is disgusting that the Corp has awarded the work to a Wisconsin
contractor. I'm sure many Corona/Riverside contractors can use
ultra-high blasting unit to remove lead based paint. Paint it with
something that graffiti won't adhere to. Good grief...it's only 38
years old! Corona needs to keep some things - the City is cutting down
a lot of it's mature trees!!!

I love the mural. My whole life I have been driving by it. They just
can't take it down. They can't. That use to make me feel like an
American when I was a little bitty kid. I didn't know about wars and
freedom - I just knew it meant America. Please do not take this down.
Fix it up. And if a bunch of people need to volunteer and work for free
to do it and get donated "approved" paint... so be it! This mural is a
compliment to our Army corps. I don't see how they could want it down.

so much fun as a child to look out the window at it each time we passed
by. It's an incredible part of our history, as well as our individual
lives, and I don't see why we can't get a commitment it will be
repainted once the lead is removed.

I think we should go in at night like the tager did and redo the whole
thing as it was

I move to Corona Ca in 1976 when I was 12 years old.. Love to see it
restored, it is a historic icon, and it bring back alot of memories.
Paul B
Love to see it restored. Please post color pictures in it's glory days!
If you need help, I'm a sign painter - located Murrieta.

Please save this SoCal
landmark and protect it from the animals who deface it. It's the only
good thing about driving east on the 91. Pilots also use it as a
reporting point for flying into Corona or Chino.

What a shame if they take it down. It shows a great representation of
what America is all about. There are a lot of people during that time
watched as it was being put up. It was an amazing event to see. By
taking it down we are losing some of the patriotism that bestows upon
us thru this representation. I would say there should be a petition
started in favor of restoring this iconic mural.
Cindy
Restore it! it's a beautiful mural with a great story and great
inspiration.

I have always admire the Mural since we moved to Corona in 1998. I
think it would be a shame to remove it. It should be restored!
Denise C
This is the greatest mural in the world, and done by the bestest and
coolest dad's I know! We need to save it, and hope we can all gather to
repaint it if approved.

I grew up in Corona, I"m a proud graduate from Corona High School Class
of 1984 and currently live in Denver Colorado. I remember when this
mural was painted. Even as a child it moved me...meant something to me,
and whenever I bring my children and grandchildren to Corona, I have to
see the mural and tell them of how it got there and what it means. The
last couple times I saw it, it sickened me that somebody would want to
cover up this beautiful landmark with graffiti. This is a piece of
Corona's history. It MUST be restored to its original beauty and
maintained as all historic landmarks are. Driving down 6th St., I see
pictures and names on the light posts of the soldiers from Corona who
fought for this country. That's great, but it's not enough of a
monument to them.....a thank you to these soldiers who grew up here and
fought hard for our us. Some who probably hand a hand in creating this
work of art for us. Yes, please restore it. Leave it there as a
reminder to all of us of just how hard they did fight. Just the thought
that this piece of Corona's history may be removed permanently is
inconceivable. It just can't happen.

Posting here is a great way to get people to become involved. BUT are
we too late??? I'm not clear. The public comment to the Corp of
Engineers ended August 9, found in the read more about this procedure
link. Please post a link to an email so we can send our concerns
directly to the Corp of Engineers. I found this on the FB page is this
the BEST contact? Thanks, Tracy

We need to save this mural. It's a testament to the USA and all of the
men and women that have served to protect our freedom.
Jackie
I remember driving past this all the time as a kid! This needs to be
saved!!
Paul
I left in 1976 but I remember it as a kid
Jewel Wescott
I graduated Corona Sr. High in 1987... The mural is a tribute to the
many men and women who have served or nation!!! Please save the mural!!!

I was one of the 1976 Corona
High School graduates that painted the Prado Dam Mural. Before we
painted it, it was a focus of horrible graffiti, an eyesore. Since we
painted it, it's become a Corona landmark. I am proud of the mural and
want to see it restored. It is a tribute to the many men and women who
have served our great country. Please save the mural!
Laurie R
Please save this mural!!! It would be a disservice to take it down.
This is something for our city and county to be proud of. Thousands of
people pass this daily on the freeway, this needs to be restored! I
would be willing to help paint! I know lots of people would. It would
be such a lift in spirits to see this restored, not only to our own
community but to everyone who passes by!
Chantel B
I think this is a great site
and the perfect go-to for all the information needed to make sure we
receive a full restoration of a loved historic mural. This is a mural
that sends a message of American Independence and the concept of
Freedom. My amazing dad, Ron Kammeyer, was a student from Corona High
who, I’m proud to say was apart of the paint and design of this art
piece in 1976. The Prado Dam is a mural that has history and needs to
stay. Thank you for setting up this site to help #$%$ure it does.

its almost criminal to me to remove this mural and replace it with
something else.
Mike G
gotta save that mural i remember it as a kid it would be a damn shame
to see it gone...There is no other option but to repaint the damn dam
to what it was. How about a boyscout project huh?
Art M
Repaint it and preserve it with "Historical Status"
Art M
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the dam feels
"modifications are necessary to meet the demands placed on the Santa
Ana River Mainstem Project, which extends from Seven Oaks Dam above
Redlands to the Pacific Ocean at Newport Beach".........But they really
should preserve the bicentennial mural.
Donna M
Whenever I head back to Corona from Orange County or Coming from Los
Angeles County, when I see the Prado Dam wall I know I am home..Even
tho I now live in Hemet..Corona will always be my home..
Sabrina R
So sad...I've written and posted all over trying every effort I could
think of to help this not be lost forever. Breaks my heart!!
Paula Ann
Yes, sad! It will never be restored unless there is some plan put into
place for it to happen! They are being too wishy washy in their
responses for me to feel good about this.
Jennifer Ann Home Gardens, CA
I do not think that is the original painting. I recall a friend of my
brother repainting the mural with a group of people as his Eagle Scout
project probably 20 years ago. That is all they need to do again.
Natalie R
Yes the students did go out and clean and repaint it but it was the
same design.
Prado Dam Graffiti had been removed from the words 200 years of
freedom, but the rest of the mural is origional. The Corp. says there
is lead in the paint and won't allow repairs. But they have never
answered where the lead paint is. Is it in the graffiti underneath the
mural? We must demand any removal come with a mechanisum in place for a
compleate vintage restoration.
Christa F
Yes, I remember that when I was a kid. I've lived in this area
nearly my whole life.
Natalie Rivera,
I grew up in Corona, CA, I"m a proud graduate from Corona High School
Class of 1984 and currently live in Denver Colorado. I hope I am
reaching the right person for this issue. I am writing because the Army
Corps of Engineers is planning on removing the Prado Dam Mural, due to
the lead based paint that was used when it was originally painted in
1976 by students from Corona High School commemorating our country's
200 years of Freedom, but they have no plans to restore it to its
original glory. This is not just a school art project, it's also one of
the largest murals in the country. This is a historic landmark that has
been there for 35 years. I remember when this mural was painted. Even
as a child it moved me...meant something to me, and whenever I bring my
children and grandchildren to Corona, I have to see the mural and tell
them of how it got there and what it means. The last couple times I saw
it, it sickened me that it had been allowed to deteriorate so badly and
that somebody would want to cover up this beautiful landmark with
graffiti. This is a piece of Corona's history...our country's history.
It MUST be restored to its original beauty and maintained as all
historic landmarks are. Driving down 6th St., I see pictures and names
on the light posts of the soldiers from Corona who fought for this
country. That's great, but it's not enough of a monument to them.....a
thank you to these soldiers who grew up here and fought hard for us,
some giving the ultimate sacrifice. Some who probably hand a hand in
creating this work of art for us, which is seen by the hundreds of
thousands of people who travel the 91 freeway daily. This needs to be
restored to its original glory and as I understand it, there are many
volunteers who are willing to repaint it to the original design once
the Army Corps of Engineers removes it. A policy for restoration and
maintenance needs to be put in place for this mural. Leave it there as
a reminder to all of us of just how hard they did fight. Just the
thought that this piece of our country's history may be removed
permanently is inconceivable. It just can't happen. It would be like
throwing away the Liberty Bell because it has a crack in it.

Your words should be
shared with City Council.
Marianne B
Well said! I didn't know it was painted by the students. They did
beautiful job!
Tom D
Well said Natalie. I agree with all you wrote. Thank you.
Natalie R
I've sent this to everyone I can think of, including the Corona
Historic Preservation Society, Ken Calvert, Senator Dianne Feinstein,
Gov. Brown, the Army Corps of Engineers, and even sent a letter to
Corona High School to try and get them involved in the restoration as
they painted it in the first place.
Kathy C
Ramirez Have you sent info to local newspaper Press Enterprise yet?
Possibly news media? ABC ch 7 & Fox ch 11 RICK Lozano Inland Empire
& Ch 4 Mary Parks has local offices in Riverside I believe.
Get it out to the people. I've shared this on FB
Natalie R
No. I'm still sending emails, at the moment to the mayor and City
Council. The Prado dam people did an interview with The Press
Enterprise yesterday at the dam, and they're the ones who posted my
email above. I welcome anyone who wants to help save the mural to do
the same thing. Write letters to everyone you can think of. Let your
voice be heard.
Stephanie F
A group needs to go and speak at City Council. With elections
coming up, perhaps some officials will take this more seriously. Also,
add people to this group. The number of people in groups is power too.
Power in numbers.
Natalie R
I'm a native of Corona but I'm trying to raise awareness from Colorado
because I believe the mural needs to be restored. I've sent the email
to city council. Please, spread the word and gang up on them and help
me save our mural.
Ruth R
I'm a registered
professional archaeologist with a Master's degree in Cultural Resource
Management. I'm also the former Riverside County Archaeologist. I live
in Corona and I always drive by this historic patriotic mural. Did the
Corp. not have a public hearing on this? Does anybody know?
Ruth R
I only found out about this issue (of the planned removal) about an
hour ago, but I am quickly doing all I can to spread the word about
this on Facebook and I plan on contacting the Corp. as well as my
representatives.
Stephanie F
You should share on "Citizens for Corona" and "what's up Corona"
pages.
Tasha Santamouro B
I just did What's Up Corona... I'm not on the other site but you can
share too.
Mary Aspinwall S
I shared it on Citizens for Corona
Sabrina S
Make sure you stress the need to not only share but make your
voice heard (or read) by emailing the contact in charge of all this. In
addition whether you're an Eric Linder supporter or not, he claims to
have nothing but love for Corona High & being a person to represent
the people should be voicing on this as well. I've posted to him w no
response
Stephanie F
Has anyone contacted Corona High School (is there a PTA) or is anyone
going to go and speak at a City Council Meeting? This is something
unique and historical to Corona. The City Council members have been
saying we need to make Corona Unique to bring business. Since this is
almost a "gateway" into Corona, it's free advertising and a chance to
bring people in.....
Prado Dam
Today we contacted Mayor Of Corona Karen Spigel, Assemblymember Eric
Linder, and the Press Telegram. Please contact your government
officials and the Corp. to issue a policy statement that they are
dedicated to a total vintage restoration of the Prado Dam Mural. We
will post the names of all the Public officials, who do, and do not
support the Mural, at
http://friendsofthepradodammural.com/ so let us know!
